How to use these words
- Kolodvor is a main station (autobusni kolodvor, bus station; željeznički kolodvor, train station), while stanica is an ordinary stop on the route.
- To say how you travel, use the instrumental ending: Idem autobusom (I go by bus), vlakom (by train), brodom (by boat).
- Departure boards show polazak (departure) and dolazak (arrival); your peron is the platform or bay.
A little culture
Buses are the main way to travel between Croatian cities. Zagreb’s blue trams run day and night, and Osijek has trams too. Ferries to the islands are run mostly by Jadrolinija; in summer, buy tickets early and arrive in good time.
Common mistakes
- Saying “Idem s autobus”. The natural form is Idem autobusom.
- Calling a small bus stop kolodvor. A kolodvor is a station building; a stop is stanica.
