How to use these words

  • Izvolite is what shop assistants say when they are ready to help you (“yes, please?”) and when they hand you something (“here you are”).
  • Koliko košta? is for one thing; for several things say Koliko koštaju?
  • On doors you will see otvoreno (open) and zatvoreno (closed); in windows sniženje or popust means a sale.

A little culture

Markets are busiest and freshest in the morning; Zagreb’s Dolac market is the most famous. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, but small market stalls and cafés may prefer cash. At the till you may be asked whether you want a bag (vrećica), which usually costs a little extra.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing kupiti (to buy) and platiti (to pay): Mogu li platiti karticom? means “Can I pay by card?”.
  • Mixing up skupo (expensive) and jeftino (cheap). A useful pair to learn together.
