How to use these words

  • The three meals are doručak (breakfast), ručak (lunch) and večera (dinner). Traditionally lunch is the main hot meal of the day.
  • Before eating, everyone wishes Dobar tek! (enjoy your meal). When raising a glass, say Živjeli!
  • The verbs are useful straight away: jedem (I eat) and pijem (I drink): Pijem kavu, Ne jedem meso.

A little culture

Many Croatians eat a mid-morning working meal called marenda on the coast and gablec in the north. Bread is on the table with almost every meal.

Common mistakes

  • Saying “kafa”. That is Serbian or Bosnian; in Croatia coffee is kava.
  • Asking only for voda in a restaurant. You will be asked gazirana ili negazirana?, sparkling or still.
