How to use these words
- Kuća is a house; most people in cities live in a stan, an apartment.
- Vrata (door) is always plural in Croatian, even for one door: Vrata su otvorena, “the door is open”.
- Prati is to wash (dishes, clothes); čistiti is to clean; the machine is perilica, and the fridge hladnjak.
A little culture
In Croatian homes people usually take off their shoes at the door, and guests are often offered slippers (papuče). Balconies are used as an extra room for coffee, plants and drying laundry.
Common mistakes
- Treating vrata as singular: it is vrata su, never “vrata je”.
- Using soba for every room. Soba is a room in general; the bedroom is spavaća soba and the living room dnevni boravak.
