- Ask Što radiš? (informal) or Čime se bavite? (polite, “what is your profession?”). Answer with Radim kao…: Radim kao konobar, I work as a waiter.
- Most job titles have a female form: učitelj / učiteljica, liječnik / liječnica, konobar / konobarica, prodavač / prodavačica.
- Plaća is your salary; pauza your break; slobodan dan a day off.
A little culture
Croatian working days often start early, at seven or eight in the morning. August is the classic month for godišnji odmor, annual leave, when many offices run slowly.
Common mistakes
- Using the male title for a woman: a female doctor is liječnica, a female teacher učiteljica.
- Saying “Ja radim učitelj”. Add kao: Radim kao učitelj.
