How to use these words
One and two change with the gender of the noun: jedan sok, jedna kava, jedno pivo, and dva soka but dvije kave.
Prvi, drugi, treći (first, second, third) are used for floors, dates and directions: drugi kat is the second floor.
Pola means half: pola kile (half a kilo), and in clock times pola devet means half past eight, “half way to nine”.
A little culture
Croatia has used the euro since 2023, and prices are written with a comma: 4,50 €. Phone numbers are usually read in small groups of two or three digits.
Common mistakes
Saying “četirinaest”. Fourteen is četrnaest, and sixteen is šesnaest, not “šestnaest”.
Reading pola osam as 8:30. It means 7:30.
