How to use these words
- Zovem se Ana literally means “I call myself Ana”. You can also simply say Ja sam Ana.
- Drago mi je (nice to meet you) literally means “it is dear to me”. The natural reply is I meni, “me too”.
- After iz (from) the country name changes its ending: Hrvatska → iz Hrvatske, Engleska → iz Engleske, Jordan → iz Jordana.
- Nationalities and some states have separate words for men and women: Hrvat / Hrvatica, and for “married” a man says oženjen sam while a woman says udana sam.
A little culture
In formal situations Croatians use gospodin (Mr) and gospođa (Mrs) with the surname, and the polite Vi. Among young people and colleagues first names and ti come quickly, often after the other person suggests it.
Common mistakes
- Saying “Ja sam iz Hrvatska”. After iz the country must change: Ja sam iz Hrvatske.
- Mixing up the married words: oženjen is only for men and udana only for women; they come from different verbs.
