🔤 Gender of nouns جنس الأسماء
Every noun is masculine, feminine or neuter — usually visible from its last letter.
1. The rule of the last letter
| Gender | Example | Example | Example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Masculineends in a consonant | grad | stol | prijatelj |
| Feminineends in -a | žena | kava | ulica |
| Neuterends in -o or -e | more | selo | pivo |
💡 Useful exceptions: “noć” (night) and “stvar” (thing) end in a consonant but are feminine; “tata” (dad) ends in -a but is masculine.
2. Adjectives follow the noun
An adjective changes its ending to match the gender of the noun it describes: nothing, -a or -o.
| Adjective | Masculine | Feminine | Neuter |
|---|---|---|---|
| good | dobar dan | dobra kava | dobro jutro |
| big | velik grad | velika kuća | veliko more |
| new | nov stan | nova torba | novo selo |
