How to use these words
- Vrijeme means both time and weather: Kakvo je vrijeme? is “What is the weather like?”.
- Describe the weather with je: Danas je sunčano, Oblačno je. For rain and snow, Croatian says they “fall”: Pada kiša, Pada snijeg.
- For how you feel, use mi je: Hladno mi je (I am cold), Toplo mi je (I am warm).
A little culture
On the coast two winds shape the weather and the mood: the bura, a cold, strong, dry wind from the north-east that clears the sky, and the jugo, a warm, humid southern wind that brings rain and, people say, bad temper.
Common mistakes
- Saying “Ja sam hladan” for “I am cold”. That means you are a cold person! Say Hladno mi je.
- Saying “Je kiša”. Rain falls: Pada kiša.
