How to use these words
- Reflexive verbs carry se: tuširati se (to shower), odmarati se (to rest). Se usually goes second in the sentence: Ujutro se tuširam.
- Frequency words: uvijek (always), ponekad (sometimes), nikad (never), ujutro (in the morning), navečer (in the evening).
- With nikad Croatian uses a double negative: Nikad ne pijem kavu, literally “I never don’t drink coffee”.
A little culture
Coffee is part of the daily rhythm: a quick one at home, another with colleagues, and a long, social coffee with friends after work or at the weekend. Lunch is traditionally the main meal of the day.
Common mistakes
- Dropping ne after nikad: “Nikad pijem” should be Nikad ne pijem.
- Forgetting se: “Ujutro tuširam” is incomplete; say Ujutro se tuširam.
