How to use these words
- You apply for a job with prijaviti se: Prijavio sam se na natječaj, I applied for the advertised position.
- A permanent contract is ugovor na neodređeno (literally “for an undetermined time”); a fixed-term one is na određeno. A new job often starts with probni rad, a probation period.
- Otkaz covers both being dismissed and resigning: dati otkaz usually means to quit, and dobiti otkaz to be let go.

Permanent contracts are highly valued in Croatia. At interviews people use the polite Vi, and many workplaces slow down in August, when most people take their godišnji odmor.
