👤 Personal pronouns الضمائر الشخصية
I, you, he, she, we, they — and when Croatian leaves them out.
1. The pronouns
| Who | One person | More than one | Meaning |
|---|---|---|---|
| I / we | ja | mi | I · we |
| you | ti | vi | you · you all (and polite “Vi”) |
| he / they | on | oni | he · they (men or mixed) |
| she / they | ona | one | she · they (women) |
| it / they | ono | ona | it · they (neuter things) |
2. You usually drop them
The verb ending already shows who is speaking, so Croatian normally leaves the pronoun out. Use it only for emphasis or contrast.
Examples
- Govorim hrvatski.
I speak Croatian. (normal) · أتكلم الكرواتية. (عادي) - Ja govorim hrvatski, a ti ne.
I speak Croatian, but you do not. (contrast) · أنا أتكلم الكرواتية، أما أنت فلا. (مقارنة)
💡 Use Vi (capital) with people you do not know, older people, officials and at work. Use ti with friends, family and children.
